Tukon Church of Batanes

It is one of the icons of Basco and the even the entire province of Batanes. A picture we often see in social media sites, blogs, magazines and promotional materials of the place, a proven eye-catching and curiosity invoking sight because of its captivating aura. But seeing it in real is a different thing, because it is more beautiful in real life!

Surrounded by verdant rolling hills of Basco, the chapel on the hill of Tukon is also known as Mt. Carmel Chapel. It was a dream turned into reality by the family of former Congressman and current Budget Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad for the people of Barangay Tukon, a highland village of Basco. Built in late 2007 and publicly opened in 2008 in time for the wedding Julia Abad, Secretary Abads’s daughter.

Tukon means mountain in Ivatan dialect.

Mt. Carmel Chapel was designed by premier architects Joven Ignacio and Tina Turralba, inspired by the traditional Ivatan houses with its stone walls and facade. The interior is filled with local wood works while the ceiling is decorated by beautiful frescoes of saints painted by the art scholars of Fundacion Pacita.

The chapel is filled with wood works, and its ceiling is painted by local artists.

The chapel on the hill of Tukon is a romantic and captivating image of Basco, beautifully standing on top of the rolling hills and against the northern winds that Batanes is famed for. It is as if a grand location for a fairy tale wedding, and everyone that sees it unparalled charm falls into a dream of walking down its short aisle to say “I do” to the very person they love.

A prefect place to say “I do“.

Tukon Chapel is one of the stops in North Batan tour, it is near Basco PAGASA Weather Station and Fundacion Pacita. Getting there from Basco town proper on a DIY, contact Batanes Trycicle Operators and Drivers Association at +639297038404 and ask for a tricycle to take you there for P120 one way. You may also rent a bike and pedal your way up there, quite steep climb though but on a good road.

Vayang Rolling Hills of Batanes

Another popular rolling hills in Batan Island is the one up north of Basco. The hills give you an unobstructed view of the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). This is one of the most visited spot north of Basco. This, together with the Marlboro country south of Batan somewhat epitomises what Batanes to the general populace is all about- endless verdant rolling hills, deep blue skies and magnificent view of the sea. Perennial postcard-ready view

Morong Beach of Batanes

Morong Beach (Nakabuang Arch) in Sabtang, Batanes

Of all the beaches fringing the coast of Sabtang Island, Morong Beach is probably the most well-known. Thanks to the large rocky arch that has become an icon not just of the island but Batanes as a whole. The natural formation is called Nakabuang Arch. (The beach is also commonly referred to as Nakabuang Beach.)
Morong Beach is a favorite among Batanes tourists for many reasons. The sand here is much fairer than other beaches in the province. The waves are also less ferocious; they are friendly enough for a swim. Bookmarked by grass-carpeted small hills, it is actually a pretty short stretch, you can walk from one end to the other in a matter of minutes.
Material/Type: Sandy
Nearest airport: Basco
How to get here: From Manila, fly via Philippine Airlines or SkyJet to Basco, Batanes. At the airport, you may hire a tricycle to take you to Ivana Port (P440 roundtrip). You might want to consider going the next day because the boat to Sabtang usually leaves at around 6:30am (which you will miss on the day you arrive in Basco.) At the Ivana Port, board the faluwa, the traditional Ivatan boat, to San Vicente Port in Sabtang Island (P75). A tricycle tour from here will take you around the island and make a stop at many of the attractions including Morong Beach. Tour costs P800, maximum of 2 persons by tricycle.
Where to stay: Most tourists visit Sabtang on a day tour only, which means they return to Batan Island in the afternoon. They usually stay in Basco. If you really wish to stay overnight in Sabtang, contact your guide and have him arrange an accommodation with you at a local high school (P250) or a homestay with an Ivatan family.
Where to eat: Paypanapanayan Canteen is where most guides take tourists. It is the usual lunch stop of the Sabtang Island Tour. Meal costs P350 per head. However, there are a few other carinderias in the area near the port.
Don’t miss: The iconic Nakabuang Arch. Don’t forget to take a photo under the arch!
If you have more time: Check out the other attractions on the island. A tricycle day tour costs P800, good for 2 persons. It will take you to at least five of the best places in Sabtang including Chavayan Village, Tinyan Viewpoint, and Sabtang Lighthouse
